Grandpa was born one mile south of Union Center one mile west, north side back in the field McMechan Place Grandpa died at Sarah Bush Lincoln Hospital of Cancer at 10 am on a Tuesday.
he liked playin the violin.
the best thing i remember about Grandpa was when Dad bought me my first BB gun id take it out there an chase his chickens with it an go out to the old cattle barn an climb in the feeder boxes an shoot the the litebulbs out. Grandpa would get mad at dad for bringin that gun out there with me.
then i remember needin a haircut so Grandpa talked me into lettin him do it seein how he used to cut the boys hair when they were young, needless to say i never let Grandpa do that again! mom had a fit it was so uneven he had sat me down at the picnic table outside the house (for better liting he said)an cut at my hair!
Grandpa always kept an old Folgers coffee can beside his chair an in his vehicles to spit chewin tabacco in. sometimes he would miss an stain his shirt!
he would say "Boy Aint That a Da_ Mess"
the Quote i remember was "Sh_t Fire an Save The Matches"
story told by Jeff Winnett
The Winnett's also had a Standard Station in Charleston where the boys worked in there younger days.

A story told by Jesse Piercy who is Kenneth Piercy's widow
she says that Grandpa had called her up sometime after Grandma passed and asked her to go out with him,Grandpa in all his charm told her he was tired of doin his own cookin an cleanin an wanted to know if she would be interested (well i'm sure she was just taken by this wonderful offer NOT!!!!)Jesse told him she didnt like doin it either but she had to do it anyway an thanked him for callin.
He even tried to sweetin the pot by sayin he had a pad in Florida! She said no thank you she certainly didnt want to move in with him either! Again thanked him for callin!!!
this story told by Jesse Piercy from Charleston ILL.When Grandpa & Grandma were 1st married they lived in St.Louis Mo. at the age of 22 her worked as a Shoe Cutter in a Shoe Factory in Missouri. Grandma was 19 an they rented a house for $25 a month this was in 1930.

Grandma died 8pm sunday in Clewiston Florida at the Hendry Hospital
we had to wait until her body was flown back to Illinois from Florida and since Grandpa didnt want to fly we had to wait until he got home too.this explains the delay in burial.
Grandma would always amble around grumblin about Grandpa altho i doubt Grandpa paid much attension especially when a ball game was on.she always fed me all kins of stuff when i would go down for a visit.Grandma didnt have alot to say but i enjoyed my visits with her.
her fruit cakes at christmas were awful my brother would toss it around the house like a football. mom said it made a great doorstop!
Grandma's stiff leg was the result of an infection in her knee, they drained fluid off an fused the bone together to make one solid bone.
Grandma had a machine that was made by Sears that washed clothes as well as dishes.
